Our New Tree!
Our new Sunset Maple tree has arrived and been planted in the center of our classroom space in our prairie garden. Thanks to Knupper Nursery & Landscape for helping us find and plant the tree! This is the first update to our garden...much more happening this spring!
Also, Ms. Mekky's 5th grade class helped to till and add soil to the raised beds this week. Classrooms from each grade will be planting seeds in their beds to harvest in the fall. We hope to have lots of good veggies to try in the fall!
Keep an eye on Ivy Hill as our garden continues to grow!

Spring = Back to the Garden!
Now that the buds are starting to come out on the trees, it's a good reminder that it's time to get back to work in the Ivy Hill garden! On Thursday, May 9th, we will be having a sunset maple tree planted in the prairie garden space where the limestone pathway/classroom meeting circle was laid last year. Our friends at Knupper's are helping us to plant the tree and to make further plans for our prairie garden.
Also, several classes are taking over the production beds for their grades and will plant before the end of the school year. Kindergarten is talking about planting pumpkins which will be ready in time for their fall study!
Thanks, in advance, to our Cub Scouts who will be helping to water the garden again this summer!
Keep checking back for more information as we plan to do lots of garden work in the coming weeks!

Fall Garden Day a Huge Success!
On Sunday, September 30th, Ivy Hill families joined together for a morning of hard work and collaboration to accomplish many important projects in the Ivy Hill Community Garden, including the following:
*Laying a new limestone pathway through the developing prairie garden, covering a new irrigation system that will help to keep the prairie garden thriving
*Planting new shrubs in one section of the prairie garden
*Planting new perennial plants in a "pollinator patch" by the raised beds
*Adding new topsoil to the raised beds to prepare them for spring planting
*Mulching around all of the new plantings and other trees in the garden space
As well, we dedicated two garden signs, co-sponsored by the Ivy Hill PTA, including one to honor Ivy Hill's former principal, Ms. Kristy Csensich. Students and parents also had the opportunity to Skype throughout the morning with Ms. Csensich who is currently living and working in Lima, Peru.
Ivy's garden landscapes have been spearheaded by Di Bolash, master gardener with the Arlington Heights Garden Club, who has worked with other master gardener volunteers to design a working production garden and a native-species prairie garden. Without Di's direction and support, Ivy's garden would certainly not be off to such an amazing start!
We were so pleased to have so many students and parents come to support our garden efforts. Now, the garden is prepared for winter and will be ready for a big Spring planting day. We look forward to seeing you all then! Thanks again to all of our volunteers!
